The best places to visit in January in India are Gulmarg for snow, the White Rann of Kutch for Rann Utsav, Jaipur for the Literature Festival (14-18 January 2027), Ahmedabad for Uttarayan, Madurai for Pongal, Kaziranga for rhino safaris, Alleppey for the backwaters and the Andaman Islands for calm seas. The weather is pleasant and cool in January in most parts of the country so you can pick between snow, desert, wildlife and beach in the same month.
Below are our top eight picks:
1. Gulmarg, Kashmir: Experience snowfall here in January
January falls inside Chillai Kalan, Kashmir's harshest 40-day winter spell that runs from 21 December to about 31 January. That is exactly why a lot of people prefer going to Gulmarg to enjoy the ski season and have an adventure of a lifetime.
- Do: Gulmarg Gondola Phase 1 (to Kongdoori) and Phase 2 (towards Apharwat), beginner ski lessons, sledging.
- Gondola tickets: about ₹800 for Phase 1 and ₹1,000 for Phase 2 per person, booked only online on the J&K Cable Car Corporation portal (approx., as of November 2026) [CHECK]. Phase 2 often shuts in high wind or poor visibility, so keep a spare day.
- Budget tip: stay in Srinagar or Tangmarg and day-trip to Gulmarg if Gulmarg hotel rates are too steep.

2. White Rann of Kutch, Gujarat: Rann Utsav under a winter sky
The Rann Utsav 2026-27 Tent City at Dhordo runs from 1 November 2026 to 7 March 2027, and January is one of its best months: clear skies, cool nights and the salt flats at their whitest. Plan your visit around a full-moon night if you can. [CHECK January 2027 full-moon date]

3. Ahmedabad, Gujarat: Uttarayan kite festival
On 14 January the whole of Ahmedabad heads to its rooftops for Uttarayan, and the kite flying carries on into Vasi Uttarayan the next day. Gujarat Tourism usually hosts the International Kite Festival in the days around Uttarayan; the 2027 dates had not been announced at the time of writing. [CHECK on gujarattourism.com]
- Do: book a pol (old-city) homestay with rooftop access, try undhiyu and jalebi, and walk the Old City heritage trail.
- Pair it with: Kutch, which is a short flight or an overnight train away.
4. Jaipur, Rajasthan: Literature Festival and cool desert days
The 20th Jaipur Literature Festival runs from 14 to 18 January 2027 (Outlook India; NewsBytes). Days are sunny and comfortable for forts; nights are cold enough for a proper jacket.
- Do: Amer Fort early in the morning, the walled city's bazaars, and a day trip to Abhaneri stepwell.

Thai Pongal falls on 15 January 2027, with Bhogi on 14 January, Mattu Pongal on 16 January and Kaanum Pongal on 17 January (Drik Panchang). Madurai is the best base: the Meenakshi Amman Temple is decorated for the festival, and the district's jallikattu events, including the famous one at Alanganallur, are held over the Pongal days. Kaziranga National Park opened its 2026-27 season in early October 2026 with jeep safaris from the Kohora range, and elephant safaris resumed soon after (The Sentinel, Assam). By January the tall grass has thinned, which makes one-horned rhinos, wild buffalo and swamp deer much easier to spot. [CHECK current range-wise safari timings and fees]
- Do: one morning jeep safari in the Central (Kohora) range and one in the Western (Bagori) range.
- Pair it with: Shillong and Cherrapunji. Our Meghalaya trip cost guide shows how to budget the Guwahati leg.
7. Alleppey, Kerala: backwaters in the dry season
Can we visit Kerala in January? Yes, it is one of the best months. The monsoon rains are over, humidity is lower and houseboat cruises on Vembanad Lake are comfortable all day. It is also peak season, so book houseboats in advance and confirm whether the price includes meals and air-conditioning (many run AC only at night).
- Do: an overnight houseboat, a canoe trip through narrow canals, and a day at Marari beach.
8. Havelock (Swaraj Dweep), Andaman: calm seas and clear water
January brings dry weather and calm seas to the Andamans, which means reliable ferries and good visibility for snorkelling and diving. It is also peak season, so book Port Blair-Havelock ferries well ahead.
- Do: Radhanagar Beach at sunset, snorkelling at Elephant Beach, and a day trip to Neil Island (Shaheed Dweep).
